Talbert ICS Laboratory Cleaning- Lab Decontamination

Laboratory Fume Hood
Prior to general contractors renovating laboratory facilities, Talbert ICS provides qualified HAZWOPER-trained technicians to thoroughly decontaminate the sites according to MSDS specifications. As always, Talbert ICS takes great care to assure the safety of all those working in hazardous environments by strictly adhering to industry regulations.
Chemical fume hoods are found anywhere there are chemicals being used; hospital labs, college and high school chemistry labs, research laboratories.

Talbert ICS, Inc. has the knowledge and the experience required for decontamination of chemical fume hoods and the surrounding laboratory benches and equipment.

Decontamination is recommended before renovation of laboratories to protect the renovation contractor from the possibility of receiving chemical burns due to residual chemical contamination on the surfaces of the chemical fume hoods, table tops, drawers, and other lab equipment.

Decontamination is also recommended and sometimes required before changing laboratory occupants. This ensures no cross contamination of chemicals that are used for different processes.

Certain processes require that a chemical fume hood be decontaminated on a regular basis (i.e. every 6 months) to ensure the chemical fume hood is in proper working condition. Dust and debris can build up at the exhaust fan duct that will decrease the efficiency of the hood.

Decontamination and costs range from a mere surface wipe of the surfaces, to full decontamination of all chemical fume hoods, counter tops, shelves, drying racks, cabinetry(inside and out) and floors of the laboratory.

In a full decontamination of a chemical fume hood, baffles are removed to facilitate the cleaning of the area behind the baffles. Troughs are cleaned of all debris. All dust and debris is removed using a HEPA filtered vacuum and then all surfaces, including what can be reached by hand inside the exhaust duct are cleaned using cleaners that are chosen based on the chemical that has been used inside the hood. MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) are requested from the customer for the chemical and materials that have been used in the hood so that a determination can be made as to the proper cleaning material. All glass sashes are cleaned and polished as part of the process.

Technicians involved with this procedure are trained and certified HAZWOPER as well as in asbestos. The cross training in asbestos is required due to the fact that most older chemical fume hoods have side panels, baffles, and work surfaces that are asbestos containing materials.
